The Medical research charity Arthritis Research UK launched its evidence-based report in January 2013 titled ‘Practitioner-based complementary therapies for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and lowback pain’, using results from randomised clinical trials to assess their effectiveness and safety.

The therapies that were shown to be the most effective were:

  • Acupuncture for osteoarthritis, low back pain and fibromyalgia
  • Massage for fibromyalgia and low back pain
  • Tai chi for osteoarthritis
  • Yoga for back pain
